Focus on the activity – not the goal

To complete a goal, you need to focus on the specific actions required to complete it, just like a chess player focusing on each step to get to the king. If you just focus on the end goal, your likely not to get there.

Let’s see, say for instance your goal is to generate 10 new sales over the next month. If you work over the next month keeping in your mind that you want to gain 10 new sales, then you’re likely to not reach that target or not know how to track your progress or determine which areas are letting you down throughout that month.

Break each goal down until all is left is an action plan. By creating a clear action plan to reach your goal you will know each day and week where you need to be and what you need to be doing to reach the target.

Goal: 10 new sales over the next month

Break down:

  • How many leads do you have to get to translate to 10 sales? 15

  • How many sales meetings do you need to have to generate 15 proposals? 25

  • How many calls do you need to make to set up 25 meetings? 50

  • How many business days do you have? 22

  • How many calls do you need to make each business day to arrange meeting? 2-3 calls a day

  • How many of those calls each day do you need to convert to a meeting? 1, 3 days I’ll need to convert 2 calls

See how simple that seems? And you now know exactly what you need to do each day and how to track your progress.

By setting real goals you have positive, purposeful, reachable signposts for the future of your business; rather than simply being reactive, you are in control of your own direction and destiny.

Break each goal down until all is left is an action plan and be committed! + always make sure your goals are SMART – specific, measurable, achievable, relevant and time-bound.
